A Letter Form England
The findings of the Joseph Barker line.
22, June 1981
Thomas Pace Family,
Correspondence has been received from England (finally!)
Some interesting items were found regarding the family of John
Pace and Ann Powton. I will review briefly the facts that we
have on the family. Recall that we have been working from
records of the early LDS Church and have hoped to find more
supportive evidence in English primary sources.
The first records that we have on Thomas Pace are his
baptism into the Mormon Church and his endowment. Thomas
indicated that he was born 9 October 1827-8 at st. Margaret,
Durham. His father was John Pace (whom Thomas indicated as dying
1826) and Ann Powton. With these facts to go on, along with
Thomas's life story written by Della Schofield Pay, we have gone
into English records and found the following.
About 1809 Ann Powton gave birth to a daughter Charlotte at
Cornforth, Durham. (1861 Census st. Nicholas, Durham)
(Thomas had temple work done for his sister Charlotte.)
29 Sep 1811 John Pace married Ann Powton at Bishop Middleham
Parish.
11 Jan 1812 William Edward Pace born at Sedgefield. He was the
son of John Pace, Shoemaker and Ann Powton.
14 Jan 1814 Mary Daughter of John and Ann Pace (Shoemaker)
christened ant sedgefield.
4 Auq 1816 Hannah daughter of John and Ann Pace (Shoemaker of
Claypath) christened at Durham st. Nicholas.
23 Oct 1820 William, Son of John and Ann Pace (Shoemaker of
Claypath) christened at Durham st. Nicholas.
22 Jul 1821 John son of John and Ann Pace ( Shoemaker of
Claypath) christened at Durham st. Nicholas.
15 Dec 1822 John Pace of Claypath buried at Durham st. Margaret,
age 33.
Pace is an uncommon name in the resisters of Durham. We have
been looking for two years for John's burial. The reason it
could never be found is that we did not suspect that John died
~ prior to Thomas's birth. It was most interesting to learn what
the reason was for not finding John's death. We then found the
following entries in the records of Durham st. Margaret, the
parish where Thomas Pace said he was born on 9 October 1828.
15 Oct 1824 Thomas Pace son of Joseph Barker and Ann Pace (this
occurred at Sedgefield) baptized.
15 Oct 1825 Thomas Barker Pace buried at st. Margaret, "Infant"
10 Oct 1830 Thomas Barker Pace son of Joseph Barker and Ann Pace
(Shoemaker) baptized.
Ann Powton Pace was found in 1851, 1861 and on her death
certificate as widow of John Pace, shoemaker. We conclude that
this is your family. In 18th and 19th century England it was
very common for children to be born out of wedlock. this is
nothing to be ashamed of. Society did not have the strict
standards the we as Latter Day Saints have today. Note that
aside from the illegitimate Charlotte's birth to Ann Powton,
that her first child born after marriage came three and one half
months after her nuptial vows. It is not hard to accept, then,
that she could have had two children born after the death of her
husband. The fact that Grandfather Thomas Pace listed his
father's death as being two years prior to his own birth supports
this hypothesis.
It is now necessary to locate the origins of John Pace's
parentage. We now know that his father was John (not Henry) Pace
and that his mother was Jane Easterby.
Respectfully,
David E. Rencher, A.G.
